Winter school shoes - what to do?

Hi - this may seem like an odd question, but...

DD is in Reception and has been wearing the standard mary jane style school shoes that little girls wear. But it's getting cold now, and wet, and next week there may be some snow. I think she will need some warmer shoes, but not sure what to do, because at school they don't take their schoes off in the class room (they used to take them off at her nursery school) and I am not sure it's practical/comfortable for her to be wearing boots all day in a warm class room.

It's also not practical for her to change her shoes, because there is very little room where they hang up their coats.

What do others do?

It seems odd to me, because I know that in most European countries they take off their heavy winter shoes when they get to school and put lighter indoor shoes on...

But we are British, so are terminally underprepared for all inclement weather.

Walk her to school in her wellies, get her to change when she gets there, and if there's nowhere to keep the boots, take them home with you and bring them back later.

Couldn't she wear wellies on the journey to and from school, changing out of wellies just before going in? That's what we do if it is very wet. We change in the playground and I take the boots to and fro. So kids stand up leaning on me (or ds2's pram), boot off, shoe on, into the line and in.

DDs school doesn't allow boots in school - have to wear 'proper' shoes.

Lace-ups?

DD has always just worn he normal school shoes. If there is snow or it is very wet she goes in her wellies, changes into shoes at school, and can wear her wellies at playtimes. Only takes a few seconds to swap between slip on wellies and velcro school shies ime.

That is also what the vast majority of children do in the Y1 class I work in. Not much room for changing, but we all make allowances.

Winter boots on the way to school, and then change when she gets there. Yes they have very little room, but don't they have a cloakroom bench of any kind? there must e somewhere she can sit to change shoes.

Dd too has always worn her normal shoes. You can get sturdier styles other than Mary Jane is you want.

Boots are not allowed other than wellies to walk to school in or to play outside in when it snows.

Kids can wear boots but not wellies at dd's school. She's wearing her boots these days. They don't get any more wet and dirty than the shoes - whatever you wear walking to school will get the same exposure.

My DD's feet have been fine (comfy for the day and dry etc) in these since term started.
(I thought she could wear sandals or little dolly style shoes once we get to summer term).

take her in boots or whatever, then just change in the car/playground/classroom and you take the boots home again

Good quality black boots that are comfortable for sitting down in, Clarkes has a vast range of them. DD has very very expensive ones with a waterproof liner, they don't grit down our road and it snowed a lot last winter.

Wow - thanks for all the responses ! Unfortunately I am a working mum (and hence still awake at this hour) - I take DD to school but part time nanny picks her up - so taking boots/wellies with me is not an option. It's very annoying that there is no place to get changed - only an area where the children hang their coats at the back of the class (with no room for shoes) - in my opinion a very silly set up...

Might need to get something that like lace up ankle boots.

They don't allow boots in dd's school , god knows why. I don't think many people take notice of this rule. Just get her some decent ankle boots, can't see in reality how they could be too warm/uncomfortable.

Wellies are a real option to keep at school. We have to supply them they wear them in the playground when it rains. They are kept in a plastic box with a lid outside the classroom - stored dry, but not taking up precious space. Worth chatting to the school about this. The TA brings the box into the classroom 1\2 hour before kids go out to warm up wellies, it keeps the classroom much cleaner in the winter.

fwiw DS1 has chunky boys shoes and I still use wellies quite often in the winter.

but that doesn't solve the play time problem.

My DDs have generally had winter boots, and worn these all day. They've never complained about hot feet. Obviously some schools don't allow this though.
