Schools as healthy environments?

Hello,

I am a mother and I am becoming increasingly concerned about how schools promote healthy environments. I know as a parent it is our duty to encourage my child's healthy eating and exercise at home but I also feel that schools play an important role. I was wondering what others think? Does your child's school offer healthy eating programs? does it encourage physical activity? In a time when obesity is an increasing threat to our children's future I think it is about time that schools started acting in a way to try and help children consume healthy foods and exercise more.

I look forward to hearing other people's comments on this matter! Thanks for taking the time to read this! :)

Most schools are pretty obsessed with what children bring in in their lunchboxes, sometimes going to quite extreme lengths with labelling some foods as bad and naughty. And anyway, it's parents who pack those lunchboxes.

Welcome to Mumsnet Concernedmummy1. I see you have posted this in 2 places already

Our school is great. They have PE 3 times a week, half the day is active learning and they have 3 playtimes

I dont see why it should be up to the schools tho TBH. they are there to educate not excercise my child Confused

Does your child's school offer healthy eating programs? - Yep
Does it encourage physical activity? - Yep

Thanks for your concern though!

Hm. I suspect you'd get more responses if you were honest as to why you are asking....

We've had a few of these types of questions lately on the education boards - you might like to do a search. I have no issues with my dc's school's appraoch to Healthy Eating or Exercise - mainly they focus on education and I focus on the health & lifestyle.
