wordless pictures books

my son in recepion has just brought home his first "reading" book.
its wordless and the teacher did explain that they all start with these to help them talk about stories etc....
but im just RUBBISH at doing this with him!!
my imagination must be poor because im finding it so very hard to stretch him to talk about the pictures and to draw information out of him...
any tips ??

Is it Oxford Reading? There are some suggestions inside the back cover!

I tended to ask DD: does this character look happy? What do you think he is thinking (you can ask this at various stages in the story)? If there's a shop scene or something we talk about what you can buy in the shop in the image and our own shopping trips. Afterwards I'd ask her whether she had liked the story, was any of it "scary", was any of it funny. And I might ask her to tell me the story the next day.

I just asked lots of "what is he thinking now?" type of questions, and "oooh, what happening here?"

Fortunately they seem to change them quite regularly.

See if your DS can make up a story from the pictures, play an I-Spy remembering type game (what was on the bed? Who was at the bus stop?). Spot things that are red, blue, green etc. Is it a family? Who are they? What do they do? Make it as improbable as you want. Once youget rolling, you'll surprise yourself!

It IS hard at first but you will be fine

As the others said just talk about some of the things in the pictures then, if you have done all you can, move onto one of your own books that you feel more comfortable with. Oh and dont forget to write in the home reading record book that you have 'read' it.

Soon enough you will have the dizzy heights of 3 words a page . Also although THEY change them weekly they may let you change them more often, so it might be worth asking.

If you are still stuck, what is the book about and we can try and give you some ideas. Beleive it or not these wordless books can be really useful
