DS1 coming home with an injury every day

Hi!

DS1 started full time after half term at the local village primary.

He's been at school at total of 6 days and 3 out of those he came home with an injury.

First day it was a scratch near his eye, third day a swollen eye (he says he was punched but teachers say it was an accident), then yesterday we had a call from the school that there had been another accident. Apparently a child had bumped into him and his face was badly scratched and swollen as he fell face onto the tarmac. I took a picture as his face is so swollen that it's a bit scary to look at. He claims a boy took a run and pushed him over, but the school again claims it was an accident.

I am worried that as he is little (4 in August) and in the big playground with lots of children (and not awfully well supervised from what I have observed), some children are just being a bit rough with him.

I talked to the class teacher but she says she doesn't supervise playtime so there's not much she can do about it - so is it the headteacher next or is it over the top? I am scared of what may happen next :o(

Any advice appreciated!!!

That was supposed to be a sad face but I am rubbish at doing sad faces on here!!!

Emy - I would have thought that the reception children should either 'segregated' in some way (or only allowed to play with yr 1/2) OR there should be excellent supervision in place. Obviously accidents will happen at school whilst playing and running around, but that does sound like quite a few.

I would keep the tone very civil and 'helpful' at this stage and perhaps go and watch part of the playtime/lunchtime before asking to see anyone else. Use the 'my son maybe a bit accident prone...but there has been a LOT of accidents and I wondered what the supervision/seperation is currently like.'

Thanks notyummy, I will make an appointment with the headteacher and see what her opinion is....I don't want to make a fuss but I am seriously concerned after seeing his face yesterday..

Aer the very little ones not segregated - either in a seperate playground or by having play at a different time? If they aren't, I would be making a fuss.

No they are not. I know this for sure - rubbish isn't it? He is the youngest in the whole school, and also the smallest so that's why I am so worried!!

That's awful! And it's also unfair on the bigger ones having to stop themselves tripping over tiny people all the time. Complain.

My ds sounds like yours. We had one day that he'd fallen and badly hurt his face by his eye. They tried to comfort him but he threw himself backwards apparently and hit the back of his head on the corner of a wall and of course that just made everything worse. I was called as he was in a bad way. They told me both things were an accident but ds says the initial fall was a bigger child pushing him. My ds is the smallest as well and he's always under my feet at home . I did mention to the teacher that the playground was a bit rough for him and they took it on board I think, mind you, an older child broke an essential bit of equipment that my ds needs for accessing school because of playing too roughly so that might have helped .

He said that she sounded like she was expecting the call!!!
