my ds's in yr 4 and 6 came home yesterday saying school are dropping the afternoon break as the government regulations say they are not getting enough classroom time. They have been at the same school since reception, and I just wondered , is this normal/stadard? your thoughts would be greatly appreciated wise mumsnetters of the world. xx

Fairly standard at our school for all Junior classes.

THey do get an afternoon playtime on Fridays though.

It's such a shame, but with all the targets and restrictions on schools nowadays, also inevitable!

My dd's yr1 class is dropping afternoon break after Christmas - not sure why, but I don't think it is a good idea, especially for little ones.

Its unusual for key stage 2 to have an afternoon break anyway, how long is the afternoon, Im sure they will be fine at that age.

No afternoon break in KS2 at our school. Lunch is from 1220-1.15pm. Sometimes have time in the playground on Fridays if they're good!

Most KS2 don't get an afternoon break in most schools.

mine have never had an afternoon break - lunch is 12.10 till 1pm and hometime is 3pm.

We have always had an afternoon break in KS1 and 2.

hi thanks for replying.
Lunch is 12.20-1.00pm and they finish at 3.15pm. I just thought it odd that after having had a breaktime for all these years the school are dropping it after half term. Although I think DS1 will still have to have a tiny break in the afternoon for a snack as he is a type 1 diabetic. I'm sure they won't miss it!

Smile Our type ones have a biscuit, or chocolate as and when required. Sit and munch at the table.

Most KS1 & KS2 classes here have an afternoon break the exception seems to be some RCVA schools where curriculum time is made for daily RE.

I didn't think they had afternoon breaks, just asked DS Y1 and he told me yes.

Used to teach KS2 occasionally and they didn't have a break.

No afternoon break in the juniors is common. DS1 has no afternoon break in their infant school though and this is less common.

Our junior school had no afternoon break although the infants did. The Y3s found it a bit of a shock to begin with but soon got used to it.
