Jump up a year

My yr1 girl is getting bored at school since she seems to be quite ahead. I heard about holding back a year, but not sure if it's possible to jump to year 2? Anyone got any idea?

DD was offered this option when she started at a different school. Me and DH decided against it as she has a May birthday and would have been the youngest in the year obviously, as she was the youngest in her Y2 class and struggled socially it would have been a disaster. Is there any chance of extension work for yours?

I would imagine your best first step is to talk to her teacher about where she is, and what can be done within the class. Jumping up is a huge leap, and socially she'll have to start again too - do you really think she's operating at a Yr2 level on everything? Additionally, there is the risk she'll be pushed down again at Yr6 as secondaries are reluctant to take children out of their year group.

I have never heard of a child in a state school being moved up a year. I agree with Patricia that you should be talking to her teacher to ask about ways to challenge her appropriately, within her correct year group.

Very rare in the state system. We discussed it as an option for DS1 (reception) who is currently in an independent school. School are concerned about it socially, though he was already doing numeracy with Yr1 and finding it easy. We have reservations about the school though which is another thread! Try stretching sideways, learning a musical instrument or foreign language, in addition to extension work in subjects she's doing at school - might help keep her motivated.

It used to happen in the state sector - my sister moved up a year. Fine academically, a disaster socially - the other girls in her class were going through puberty ahead of her, getting more freedom ahead of her, just plain older than her in every way.

There are better cures for any child being "bored" at school, like the work being differentiated better, or her having extra things she can work on if she's finished something ahead of the others.

My DD has a girl in her Yr7 state school secondary class who is the right age to be in Yr6, so it must be possible somehow (don't know if she came from state or private sector before secondary).
