Open plan classrooms/teaching areas

Saw a nice school,a few things put me off.Hardly any of the childrens work was on the walls, mainly in Reception/yr1. A bit more was up in year 2-3.But it was mainly stuff by the teacher.
Second problem (imo) was all the teaching areas were open plan,no dooors to classrooms,3 classes v close together.I stood in the middle area and got a headache. How do the children cope? Icould clearly hear every class and it was not even loud. What happens if one class is having a lively lesson, pop quiz or something.
Does anyone have a child at a school like this? Would it bother you?
Would French from Reception, amazing outdoor areas and free violin lessons for all yr3s outweigh any minus points for you?

Open plan is not a great idea imo. My DD had this during reception and it was too noisy for her. A nice separate class of 30 would have been far better for her than lots of children milling about from the two classes.
Interesting point from quietplease about learning French at this age. I think seven would be a better age too; the wee things have enough to do deciphering English!

Ds's school is allopen plan and its a fab school (grade 1 ofsted) I volunteer 1 day - my observations - very littel noise form calss next door, parent helprs overflow into teh corridors to do readin etc which is treated as a quiet space. If calsroom starts getting too loud then teahcer quietens everyone down there is a kind of doorway - just not a door - its not like a giant hall!

It really isn't that loud usually. I guess it depends on teh teacher.

though free violin lessons might put me off Grin

I'll add that I've got some hearing loss in one ear and I struggle like crazy in some open plan environments - it's not just the kids!
