jus started Y1 and writing is a bit big and scrawny, I know it will come in time and perhaps a boy thing.

Any ideas?

use the staedtler ergonomic pencils (very thick pencils) or pencil grips - these can help with better control of pencil and then just do a bit of practise - you can print handwriting practise sheets from the web. but it will come with age as well.

Take it easy. Year 1 is very young.

Does the teacher think it is an issue?

Is his writing bad compared to the other kids in the class?

well at the moment they are writing everyday...having to re-write a told story, had 10 spellings to copy and write sentences for at the w-end as well Sad

He is still very young. Not all 6 yrs old have a perfect pencil control.
Get him to practice on ruled paper.

My dd2 is 7 and a young Y3. All through the infants her writing was very poor, even though the content, spelling and punctuation was good. She even got a L3 in her writing SATs, much to my surprise, because the handwriting only accounts for a small part of the assessment.

This year, her teacher has decided to do a blitz on her handwriting, and she has had extra homework each night. The transformation in a 4 weeks has been amazing, and now her writing is good. I do not think that dd2 would have been ready much before the age of 7 to work on her writing because of fine motor control which comes with maturity, and also interest.

DS now Yr 2 and his writing's fine, so I'd say it'll come in time.
