Fascinating memory when I read to my DD

I was reading an Enid Blyton book to my dd earlier. She is 6 (almost 7) and in Yr2 and a free reader etc etc.

As i was reading, after a couple of pages into the Chapter I skipped a couple of words. About 10 seconds later she stoppped me and said I had read it wrong and told me what the missing words were....

Fascinating how little minds work and remember things. I think she was quite pleased with herslf and a bit annoyed with me that I didnt read it properly :)

Ds has been doing this for a while (really annoying when I try to skip bits when I think he is not paying attentionGrin)

We used to play a game where I stopped reading and he finished. Not such long books mind as he is only 4 and has done it for a couple of years now. He still can't read mind, but loves books.

It's a really common thing for children to do. And yes, fascinating.

My 3yr old does it all the time. You CANNOT skip a few words/change a word.

Mine memorised whole books after a couple of readings when she was pre-school. And I mean long books, like The Cats of Tiffany Street.

I remember once getting her to 'read' said book to a friend, who had no kids at the time, and she was so impressed. Til I told her, it was just a memory trick and most 3-4 year olds can do something similar.

Was very funny to watch her jaw drop though Grin

My Sister did this a lot, from when she was about 3 apparently. Since she was school age she's been able to recite huge paragraphs of text from memory, if anything gets quoted that's from a book that she's read, she'll tell you which one it is Hmm

Yeah.. really not at all envious of her photographic memory at all Envy Grin

Same here with my 5.7yo DS
He remembers whole sections of the books. Amazes me. What are you reading? we are on Faraway Tree & Wishing Chair at the moment- great fun!
