Trainers for Cross Country running

DS1 (aged 8) took part in the area cross country competition yesterday, and has qualified to go through the the regional competition.

His trainers are just an ordinary but rather bashed up Clarks pair. I was thinking though that he might be better running in something more supportive if he is going to be doing this kind of thing regularly.

The trouble is I don't know one end of a trainer from another. I have no idea what I am looking for. We have a limited range of shops locally in which to ask for advice.

Does anyone have any advice on what kind of thing I should be looking for? Ideally I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want something that will do the job well.

Any help appreciated!

For fine weather get a pair of running trainers, and get the fitted by a specialist shop who will assess his gait. It is worth doing, if he's going to take it seriously.

For wet/muddy conditions he'd be better off in football or rugby boots, studded ones.
