Reception dc wont bring anything to tomorrow show and tell

Tomorrow is only my ds 2nd show and tell as only been in school a few weeks and he was poorly last friday. He is refusing to bring anything in tomorrow as he "doesnt want to talk about it". He is shy and lacks confidence and his teacher said he wont talk during carpet time. Hope he doesnt get in trouble for not bringing anything! And no he is not one of the younger ones he was 5 the week before he started school!

God, so do I. Ds has it every Monday (he's only had 2 so far) and is keen, but I just shudder thinking how boring it must be - for all the kids, as well as the teacher!

I'm worried that he'll wish he'd bought something once he's there but tonight he was admanent as he was last Thurday although he was sick last friday so off school anyway bless him!

I always thought it was a way of restricting the amount of tat interesting artefacts brought into school day in day out. I really don't think he's likely to be in trouble for not wanting to take anything in.

Oh thats ok then! Still worried he'll wish he'd bought something in once he's there tempted to just "slip" something in his book bag just in case he change his mind iyswim. He's like that about most things indecisive although he was certainly adament tonight!

I'm sure he won't get told off for it, but, boring or not, it is a good thing for them to do it - think of it as "Presentation Skills 101" if you like, but the point is to get them to stand in front of the class and say something. If he can get used to it now, it will mean he can give book reports, present projects etc in later years.

There are more interesting ways to get Reception kids to do this, however.

I don't think he'll be in trouble, but slip something in his book bag or have something in your pocket in case of mind-changing.

If he's only been in school a few weeks, he may want to just sit back and check it out before he commits to speaking to the whole class. It can be quite daunting for many children.
Don't worry, in a few weeks he'll be insisting he needs to choose something at 8.15 on a Friday morning.

I think its insane to do it in Recpetion. After attending school in the UK, I went to the States for a year when I was 10, where Show and Tell was a Big Thing.

I was absolutely mortified at the idea of it - I managed to wriggle out of it every week for 6 months before I changed schools.

And FWIW, I ended up as a management trainer, presenting and facilitating in front of very large groups, so IMO its bollox you need to learn it as a skill in school, let alone primary, let alone Recvpetion, fgs.

Reluctance to speak in class is the reasonn why he doesnt want to bring anything in. He doesnt talk in class at all just whispers if pushed but most the time says nothing.

My DS (6, Y2), doesn't bother taking anything for show and tell and hasn't so far this term. He only took stuff in in Reception about half the time, and kind of gave up in Y1 as there was only ever time to do about 3 kids, and in a class of 30, the odds aren't good. So I really wouldn't worry about it.

My dd is now yr 1 and took her first show and tell in this week! She too found it too much to do it before, and was never made to feel bad for it.

Show and tell is for those that want to do it surely.

My dds friend whispers in class and is now in year 4!! She is georgous, popular, clever and well liked by teachers - but cant bring herself to talk to them!

DS (nearly 3)had to do it in nursery last week, he didn't know what it was all about, tried to explain it but he didn't want to know. He ended up taking his usual umbrella(fireman sam)and he talked about it ALL DAY!! apparently

Many children take at least until Christmas to feel fully settled and comfortable in a new school. Just think of all the new experiences and situations he is having to deal with; friends, assembly, playtime, PE, new rules with new adults, big kids in the playground and around the building..... and all that before he learns anything!
There are threads elsewhere about us being nervous about talking to other Mums at the school gates, and we are fully grown adults! Imagine if you were 5! Dont be concerned, give him a little time.

Does it matter ? He'll have another chance .

Most four year olds stand up clutching the latest toy they got free with their happy meal the teacher tries to drag out some information ...usually answered with a nod or a shake of the head before the next child stands up and unveils ... the latest toy free with happy meals!

Played show and tell at home

Dh and I both went in and read story to show that we overcame our nerves and he sat with us when we read. Only did it once each.

DS first issue was trusting teacher so we had big thing of teacher says blah blah blah made up report when it came to parents evening time. Said all kinds of stuff they didn't.

Following that had a big push on getting DS to interact with strangers in shops and adults we know and come across got him to pay for stuff etc and reminded him to say thank you.

Also then had big push about teacher. Got him to give her stuff he'd drawn or made or whatever. Just to get bond with teacher.

Had peers from class round slowly but surely. One to One bodning, even just once has been v useful for DS.

Now I know he's popular and has plenty of friends, is slow to trust other adults and that he liked Show and Tell until something happened and the class laughed. DS not impressed.

Think it's his personality but feel I've done all I can.

Oddly he's happy standing up in assembly and all other things, it's jus a show and tell thing. Dont blame him it's dull as hell.
