What are your year 1's spellings this week?

I just wanted to know if anyone else's are as difficult as DS'!

They include 'Canoes' 'tomatoes' 'arrows' and 'borrowing'

I know they've been doing the oe sounds but DS is one of the better spellers in his class and even he struggled with a couple this week. Last weeks included 'when' 'then' 'play' and 'singing' which makes it seem like a big jump to this weeks!

I have twins in the same class but different ability groups. The one who last year was in the top group has

bird
first
royal
enjoy
least
read

which should be ok

the other who was in the average group (and who 2 weeks ago had CVC words) has these

boot
food
toad
goat
night
high

hasn't any chance of learning the igh words - I can barely get her to sit down and look at them!

There seems to be no ryhyme or reason to how they're giving them out! Hey ho!

We have

there
off
fell

and that's it so far this term. Not testing - we are just encorouged to start getting her to spell high frequency words correctly and hopefully it will show up in her writing.

We get 5 words a week. Last week's were:

toy
bird
eat
have
like

I think that's about the right level for my ds, who is 5 and a half.

Cortina, you made me laugh!

Because
Was
Frost
Shut
Camp
Bed

There seems very little pattern to them, and I cannot interest dd in them in the slightest, so am not worrying too much about it. Her teacher certainly doesn't seem too concerned.

my DS's last week were words with 'll' in them

shell
ball etc

This wek they are 'sh' words

shock
bash etc

He is top group and gets 10

swissmiss · 05/10/2010 21:04

here ds isn't even past the 2/3 letter words! this week is

by
off
me
it
was

from reading all the other posts my suspicions are confirmed that "green" group it the lowest stream.

My son (yr 1, July birthday, but his reading has "clicked") has had some challenging spellings home, but not to the extent of the list you give. His sister in yr 3 (different school), has just had months of the year and I shared a comment with another parent on the weekend that they seem to be getting easier spellings than they were last year ... We're going to test her on her brother's lists I think as she has been very slapdash on spellings and now needs to knuckle down and pay more attention when she is writing.
