People talk about reading age and I am curious to know my sons. I've googled and found the Burt reading test (est 1974) is this accurate? Thanks.

well its one way of testing it

When people say 'his reading age is 11 on here but he is aged 7' and so, what have they tested?

Or is the reading age usually given by the school to parents?

its about being able to read a range of words without parental help. It says nothing of fluency or comprehension... just the ability to pronounce the word based on the sort fo rules we all use (like the sound "aight" makes in straight)

the thing is different reading tests test different things and give different results

The Burt reading test is a list of words the Salford test is progressively harder sentence reading YARC tests reading comprehension and there are many many others out there all giving reading ages but all slightly (hugely) different results

Burt is so old that it's not at all reliable.
