Governors - what do you actually do?

Apart from attending full governing body and committee meetings.

Am a governor myself but would like to compare what others do, because I feel we could get more involved at our school, but not quite sure how to go about it.

Governor monitoring - involved pairing with a teacher and helping out in their class a couple of times a year.

Interview panels - need specific training for this though

Disciplinary panels - thankfully a rare event.

Policy preparation - recent change in management meant the policy file needed urgent review involving governors as well as staff.

Performance Management - again needs specific training.

Safeguarding/child protection - occasionally called in to meetings, again needs specific training.

Attending school events generally - maintain a profile.

I'm on the Policy and Resource committee and the pupil maters committee.

On a month to month basis not much. Although at the moment we doing a bit more a we have a 'FMSIS' audit & normal audit next week.

But I have only been a Governor for about 6mths so not as involved as those who have been doing it a lot longer.

Have you been to any training courses?

All of the above, am also trained as an investigation officer for complaints at other GBs.

Have spent the weekend reviewing 35 polices which are part of a rolling cycle to be signed off before our next FMSiS inspection.

I also lead training and review implementation of safeguarding an child protetion.

If your LA are cutting back on training, take a look at the online programmes on the Teachers TV website... www.teachers.tv and search under governors.
