Are your Yr1s talking about boyfriends and girlfriends?

My dd1 (5.5 and yr1) came home from school yesterday saying that x is now her boyfriend. She seemed quite coy and shy about talking about it and made me promise not to tell her dad! My first reaction was that it was sweet and completely harmless, but then I started having a bit of a wobble about them growing up too quickly. Does anyone think I need to be concerned? Do they get upset if they "split up" - argh - Am I seriously overthinking this?

Yep. DS had a steady stream of girlfriends throughout Y1. He also got very coy and shy hen talking about them. But when I asked him if X liked being his girlfriend he generally said that X knew nothing about it

My DD1 started with this last year and there was also kissing and holding hands and talk about getting married and having children.

I thought this was normal, I will be reading this thread with interest?! :o)

Its normal, in a couple of years boys and girls go off each other until adolescence hits. Eg. son in year 4 had local girl round to our house to play, but wouldn't even speak to her in public.

It has always been like this.

In Reception, my dd and her friends had several boyfriends each. The boys knew nothing about this, and were blissfully ignorant of the fact that they were being shared out amongst the girls like trading cards!

My dd and her "boyfriend" definitely seem to have chosen each other - his mum said so to me this morning!

All perfectly normal I think. When dd was in reception a boy decided he liked her, dd had no clue apart from the fact he bought her a couple of presents! She was friends with boys and girls alike. This boy then one day asked her 'Is it true you like X (other boy)?' Dd in her naivity said yes (meaning 'yes I like playing with him too'), hence breaking the first boy's heart and causing an argument between the two boys....

That is the extent of her boyfriend experience to date (she's now 11 with a big crush on a lovely boy!)

I had boy/girl twins in Reception last year. Very quickly they started playing kiss chase with a group of kids (the boys feigning dis-interest but they clearly loved it!) My DD told me the other day that they've had to stop playing it now because the boys are too fast and always escape and apparently refuse to do the chasing! Too cool for school at 5

Oh yes. Dd (6.5) has been "in love" for at least a year and has their lives together fully mapped out already. The young man in question is very handsome, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he is just a little bit scared of her!

Reception and Year 1's have boy/girlfriends, years 2,3,4,and 5 won't go anywhere near each other, Yr 6's are back together again!

Also, her school is near the Cemetery and there is a Memorial Mason across from where I park the car. I think if the poor boy knew that dd has already chosen his gravestone, he would be VERY afraid!

My DD is in yr1 and has had her boyfried since easter in reception - they are getting married and are going to have 3 children and be very happy for ever and ever - that is except for the days when the young man in question decides he is marrying one of the other little girls!

dd2 had lots of boyfriends in yr1 but she freely admited that none of them knew they were her boyfriends

My dd (Y1) is never getting married or having babies. She says she will live on a farm with her best friend. Also asked this morning if 2 men could get married!!

daisy, I wouldn;t be worrying just yet! DD said she is NEVER having children because they either come through your binky, or they have to cut you open, and she is not keen on either option

My dd2 (year 2) had a 'boyfriend' in yr1
She has now decided that she no longer wants him because he is smaller than her. She has also decided not to have a boyfriend until she is thirty. I am sure that my dh is very pleased about this.

Yes my DS had 3 girlfriends ( one at a time )in Y1. He's settled with one now in Y2, the same one he had before the summer. It just means that she's the girl he likes best and he the boy she likes best.

DS1 was going to marry his girlfriend in YR1 and wondered if they could have the cat! I gently pointed out that the cat would probably be dead by then! He then went off girls for some years before re discovering them in his teens-don't worry!

My ds said he was going to marry his sister - I said we don't live in that part of the country - so he asked who he would marry I said your best friend, he said I can't do that my friends are all boys. Great no girlfriend troubles there

Dd1 shared a boyfriend with three of her friends in reception . By the sounds of it he was a rather reluctant boyfriend as he kept running away from them She now has one of her own.

He was 'chasing' her all last year, always saying hello to her when we passed him on the school run. But she would just scowl at him. Until I found out she and her friends were bullying him and making him cry and threatened to tell the school of her. Now he is her boyfriend and she doesn't make him cry. In return he doesn't run away and won't let her friends share him.

They are to be married after uni (even though she doesn't know what uni is ), when they intend on moving in with me. But they will buy their own puppy.

Last year in reception ds came and said I am going to marry X when i get older.
Me: that's nice ds, is she your girlfriend?
Ds no, i dont have a girlfriend.
Me So why do you say you are going to marry X when you get older.
ds because she told me so.

DD has just started Year 2 and is still in love with the little boy she fell for about a term into Reception. :o I'm a bit sad to hear that according to others' experiences she'll shortly be going off him - it's all rather cute! She runs after him and hugs him whether he wants to be hugged or not, while he stands there and blushes.

There was a boyfriend/girlfriend craze at one point last year in my son's reception class. My DS didn't really talk much about it. The teachers apparently put a stop to it quite quickly - not sure how, think they had a group discussion about it. I think they discouraged it because of the leaving out of people and people's feelings getting hurt.

I had a boyfriend in nursery - Richard Dickinson - I was Mary to his Joseph in the nativity!

My DS though is either going to marry me or my best friend. He likes the older woman!
