DS2 is aged 7 and has struggled throughout scholl, but has improved in the last year ith his glasses.
Still has a bit of catching up to do.
He came home with spellings that have to be written out twice on a sheet then the words have to be put into pre written sentences.
He found it really hard and is now left calling himself 'stupid'
He completed it with help from me.

Should homework be hard? MAybe he should be challlenged?
But should it be so miserable for both of us?

my ds has just started year 2 and has now got homework, spellings on a Monday to be tested on a Friday and then maths on a Friday to be tested on a Tuesday. he is about a year behind as he has slight special needs. we have found it very useful for his spellings if we physically spell the words with his foam bath letters on the floor (him doing it and me helping as little as possible). (you could use a scrabble set). he has about seven words to learn each time. we then get him to spell them out allowed before he writes them down.

i think you need to take it in two stages, once he has mastered the spelling then move on to the sentences. perhaps make cut out words of the spellings so he can place them in the gap (or re-write them so you can) so he can mix and match until he gets it right.

all in all it makes a game of it and a little more fun.

hope this helps,

Cutting the words out and making them fit is goood

Tell his teacher! Do not make a child do homework if it is making him cry. Maybe they are too hard, maybe he has a problem, maybe he is just over tired. Tell the teacher.
