yr 1 ds - help for overcoming fears, boosting confidence adn independence

DS has always been very shy. We've worked on things and he's got better and better, also getting older has helped. He's now less shy with adults we encounter, but is still quite frightened of asking other adults for help - ie teachers and TAs. New teacher is lovely and will help i think. but at the moemtn he won't got the loo by himself, and if no friend will go with him he wets himself. He says he's frightened of the dark and the fire exit nearby.

At home he's also very frightened of the dark etc and often says he's lonely if playing by himself in the day. Must admit he doesn't go to sleep alone, though I'm back to the gradual withdrawl thing at the mo after stories are done.

Any suggestions, books for me or him to help him overcome fears etc and boost his self confidence and independence would be unbelievably welcome.

The loos are dark? Can you ask the school to leave the light on?
