Parents with DDs - are/have they gone back to school in summer or winter uniform?

DD starts in reception on Monday - am not worried about it but am trying to decide between summer dress/grey pinafore etc. She says "if it's warm I'll wear my summer dress; if not I won't" but I feel it is my perogative to overthink it a bit more Grin.

Do have DS going into year 2 but not worried about whether he wears shorts or trousers Grin. Think he is being Neglected First Born for once.

My DD (going into Y4) will be returning in summer uniform, up until Oct half term. She always does, through choice. Most of the girls tend to at least initially at her school. After October winter unifrm becomes compulsary.

I remember DD starting reception adn we had only bought winter uniform. Every othe gor that first day wore summer uniform. Sad mum that I am, I went straight into town and bought the whole summer uniform ready for the ext day. PFB? LOL maybe so :)

DD has gone back in winter but it's really 50/50 in the playground!

greenlotus · 03/09/2010 23:08

Ours have gone back already - quite a lot of the little girls are in their dresses in this lovely weather and my boys have been in shorts. But for the first year (i.e. reception) I didn't bother buying shorts until the summer came round.

DD was in mixed nursery/reception class last year (where we used to live) and wore summer dresses then so have not gone overboard on buying uniform.

As we live v near school I could always look out of the window to see what other girls are wearing Grin.

We have done 2 days this week in winter and 1 day in summer. I usually use the summer uniform if the weather is nice up to the end of September.

Mostly in winter at ours - but it is North yorkshire!

We're in York :)

Funnily enough I just tried DD's summer dresses on her - they fitted OK in July (I swear) but tbh they are a bit short now, so she's decided to go for skirts.

But normally she would go back in summer dresses (not bought for Sept of course - just last summer's!)

It's often quite warm in early Sept!

I wouldn't buy a dress specially Noah but maybe you have hand-ons? Most mums of DDs do (they seem to last a season only).

NoahAndTheWhale · 04/09/2010 00:18

I do have summer dresses already - DD wore them in nursery in April/May. And I bought them with room to grow then so should still be ok now. Also got a cast-off one from neighbour.

So the choice is there :)

Well I would make a decision on the morning. Summer frock would have been good today (23 degrees this avvo) Grin

Mine (have one in p3, one in p6, ds in p4 wears the same all year round) wear whatever is suitable on the day.

Disclaimer: We live in Scotland. You have to take it day-to-day up here!

It is a mix at our school, the majority of dd's class are in winter uniform as is the rest of the school but the reception class seems to be more 50/50, it doesn't really matter to be honest, if you have summer dresses then it might be a good idea to get some wear out of them as you may find they don't fit come the spring term! I send dd back in winter uniform mainly because I like it more and it looks smarter... I think I am a snob?

domesticsluttery · 04/09/2010 08:50

Mine have gone back in winter uniforms, but I have seen a few girls in their school in gingham dresses and a couple of boys in shorts.

LIZS · 04/09/2010 10:10

Can wear either until half term so summer dress here (Year5), until it is chilly enough for tights which will probably be early October.

puch · 04/09/2010 13:08

our kids have to go back in their summer uniform until after the oct half term regardless of weather but we down south so at the moment we are having glorious weather.

Dd1 wore winter uniform because she had a new skirt that she wanted to wear. Dd2 wore summer uniform because she finds the tie and buttons on the blouse difficult (she is in Y3 Blush).

TriplePachyderm · 04/09/2010 14:09

dresses and skits here

after a wet, windy end of the holiday the temps have been 20+ since they've been back

NoahAndTheWhale · 07/09/2010 13:33

She has been wearing summer dress yesterday and today as we are clinging to the end of summer Smile

Was dd's first day, so purely for the tradition of first day pictures (saddo), she wore winter uniform. It was freezing though- although it has warmed up now after some rain. We have a summer dress ready in case it warms up , which it often does September , early October.

She came home at 11.30 with black socks (may have to re-think the white knee highs!).Hmm
