What age did your DC start using a dictionary?

What sort of age do children start using dictionaries in school? By dictionary I mean 'proper' children's dictionaries, as opposed to picture dictionaries.

DD was given one as a prize at the end of year 2.

They were certainly using them by year 3 because there was a pile on ever table and others on a bookself. I can't remember if mine used them in the infants.

DD2 has mentioned that her and two others were doing "Dictionary and thesaurus work" (?) whilst the others were getting on with different tasks - yr1.

DD used her dictionary at home from Y1 onwards. So I assume she had used them a little at school to know.

She is about to go into Y4 and is exected to use a dictionary and home and school.

Gosh - so early? Interesting. Thank you.

DD was expected, by her teachers, to look up words she doesn't know in a dictionary in Yr 2. However I'd say Yr 3 is when they really start to use them regularly.
