Health check prior to reception?

Hi
I wasnt sure whether to start this here or in health.
My dd2 starts in reception in september, and i remember when dd1 started that she had a pre school health check. This was nearly 5 years ago so my memory is hazy.
Do children still have this check prior to starting school?

DS1 starts on 7th September and I've not heard anything about a health check.

What do they want to check?

We're in Wales though - might it be diferent here?

No, here they get weighed, measured and have hearing and eyes done at school I think, well nephews did a couple of years ago.

DS started last year, didn't have one and I don't remember anything being said about it. We did take him for n eye test before he started, just to check that there was no issue with his eyesight that might have made things difficult.

My son had a health check during his reception year. The school nurse checked their weights and heights and we had to fill in a comprehensive questionnaire about the state of their health. An audiologist visited school to do a hearing check and an optician to do an eye check.

When dd1 had her check with the hv she was given a booster injection (cant remember what for)
and weighed and measured.
I remember the school doing the weight and height comparisons because i opted dd1 out.

My DD's just finished reception. They had their check (hearing, eyes etc) sometime in the first term.

Beauregard · 16/08/2010 23:18

Thanks for the replies
I opted dd1 out of the height and weight survey (or whatever its called)because she is vert tall for her age(as is dd2)and all the stats are for regular children. Also i believe my dds are predisposed to BDD and eating disorders,so i am very sensitive about weight etc.

Certainly take her to the opticians for a sight test and make sure her immunisations are up to date (if you want her to receive them).
