DD starts Y5 in September - what should she know??

Just wondering whether DD is behind or not? Had an awful Y4 with a teacher who (imo) held her back in Maths - and I'm trying to catch her up!!

Basically - she hasn't progressed in tables beyond her 2x, 5x, 10x, 11x and 3x - simply because she panics in tests and the teacher insisted they got 12/12 three times in a row on time tests before she would sign a table off as learned. Already this holiday DD has learned her 4x, 6x and 7x to about 75% accuracy consistently.

Is she very behind??

Sounds OK to me - mine hasn't started her 8s and 9s yet and is a bit approximate with some of the others - doesn't sound too bad to me.

Ummmm. In both schools my DS went to you were expected to know all of your tables by Y5.

I will be teaching yr 5 in September, their homework over the holidays was to learn ALL their times tables up to 10x10.Much of the work in yr 5 is SO much easier if the children have a rapid recall of their times tables. Make sure she knows the related division facts too ( so if 7x9=63, then 63/9=7 etc) It also really helps if she can recall some division and multiplication facts for numbers, so for 48 she can say both 4x12 and 6x8. Basic understanding of all four operations,addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, will also help, whatever method the school uses.

That's interesting - confirms my view that my daughter's school hasn't taught her well in Y4 then!!

I've taught Year 5 for 3 years (Moving to Year 6 in September) The children should have instant recall of all of the following before Year 5 (According to our Local Authority, the children should know all mental strategies by Year 5)

-Multiplication Facts up to 10x10
-Corresponding Inverse division Facts
-Number bonds to 10, 100 and 1000
-Decimal relations to basic equivalent fractions e.g half to 0.5, quarter to 0.25 etc.
-The relationship between Addition/Subtraction as inverse and Divison/multiplication as inverse.
-Basic understanding of money e.g 100p in £
-Time basics e.g. ten past, twenty past etc.

DD just done year 5 and agree about the times tables.They need to know them all with instant recall.This would be the one thing I would do in the holidays.
