really miffed at report

I'l try and keep this short!

DD is almost 8 and is suspected to have AS (no official diagnosis but something the school are "keeping an eye on").

Got her report on Friday and it is mostly really good except for Maths (for which she has a different teacher).

It says "XXX achieved a 2a in her optional SAT. She failed to achieve her target. XXX has not made any progress this year".

I'm sooooo annoyed about this. It goes on to state a couple of things she has improved and one thing she had done well at.

We know she didn't achieve her expected target in the mock SAT and discussed this with him at the time. He said not to worry, that it wasn't a fair representation of her work as in class she was working at a 3c or 3b.

We have a parent's evening on Monday. What should I say to him?

that must have been a bit of a shock after the conversation you had with the teacher! actually, i think i would take that tack, and say to the teacher that you were very surprised, and ask him which version is correct - the report or the conversation.

If it's the report, then I would then focus on finding out how you/he can help her, rather than the inconsistency. if it's the conversation, then I would ask that he amend the report as it's not a fair representation!

would also like to add that the phrase 'XXX has not made any progress this year' (if true) is FAR more a reflection on the teacher than your dd - so he's been teaching her for a whole year and yet managed to teach her nothing?! ridiculous.

even if it IS true (unlikely IMO, especially since he goes on to highlight exactly what progress she has made!) why has he not brought it to your attention earlier, a year is a bloody long time!

I don't understand why you're annoyed.
Because she didn't make any progress and they should have told you before now?
Because she did make progress and you think the comment is unfair?

If that's the worst thing the report says, I'd be quite happy with it.

A badly-written report.
The QCA test is timed, and they don't use any equipment, so some children struggle with those aspects and don't achieve the level they should.
Point out to him that the bluntness and narrowness of the comment on her report was not good!

Ask to have her report amended (or ensure that her next teacher is told), what her teacher assessment grade is.

Schools should be using, or starting to use the APP method of assessment (Assessing Pupil Progress). This means that her progress is recorded throughout the year, and a final teacher assessment grade is recorded, rather than simply a single grade from a test. Ask whether this is what they are moving towards.

Sounds like a very strange way of wording a report and I certainly wouldn't write anything like that in any of my reports. I'd discuss it with the class teacher, pointing out the difference between the report and what you had been told, and also ask what will be done next year to ensure that your child does make adequate progress.

She has made tonnes of progress this year.

I teach 16-18 year olds with learning difficulties and last year she was just about on par with them, whereas this year she would have found that work easy.

I will highlight it at the parent's evening to her class teacher at first and see what she has to say, then I'll go to the maths teacher and ask why the inconsistency.
