Is it ok to have a large gap? My childs year end result (year 2)showed quite a gap between the two. Whilst the grades were above average the effort was average. Is their anything i can do at home to help?

depends why you think he is 'lacking effort'.

Its a teacher assesment, not a personal opinion. I thought she seemed keen enough but apparently not. Anyone else experience this? Should i worry over one teachers opinion?

I'd say 'average for effort' is not something to worry about.

I'm not entirely sure that teachers (or indeed parents) always know how much effort a child is putting in. There's not exactly an objective levelling system, is there? One child may spend 10 minutes thinking about something before writing anything, and another may get straight down to work, but I don't know how you'd demonstrate one was trying harder than another.

Average effort resulting in grades above average sounds like she's got it sussed

I wouuldn't worry atm - it's very subjective trying to judge how much effort every child in a class of 30 has put in. I think I would just keep an eye on it and check with her next teacher whether they feel that she's working to her potential or if she needs a bit of a push to make more effort. And in what way, like in participating in discussions or independent work, or what.

Thank you for your replies. Whilst I am proud of her achievements I guess I am worried she sees school as too easy and will develop a lazy/know it all attitude to learning. However in her defence, I too found the teacher to be uninspiring. Will definitely keep a sharper eye on things next year. It's our first born so clearly its all new to us .
