Child is 11 and about to start secondary school. What would you do about preschool and after school care if you worked 8-8 twelve hour shifts three days a week?

Is there a breakfast / after school club nearby?

If not, it’s a very short slot pre-school so can they get themselves cereal and get themselves to school?

It’s too late to be home alone for 3 days so you will have to find someone to look after her.

What do you do now?

I would look for family day care. They often do after hours.

Thanks. It’s not for me, mine are older.

My feeling is that afterschool care is needed, I just wanted to know what others think.

How long is the commute?

SilverDrawer · 12/08/2023 01:12

It takes him about 45 minutes to get home

It's so frustrating that the assumption is started high school, no further care needed!!! Most kids in first year aren't capable or old enough to get themselves home and be alone for several hours if there are no older siblings, yet there is no provisions with wrap around care!

SilverDrawer · 12/08/2023 01:16

Yes, @SD1978 quite! It’s a bit of a nightmare.

He could change shifts but would then need to work four days

Hello, I have a 9year old and we just moved to Edinburgh, unfortunately he won’t be starting school till two weeks time, which means he will have to be on his own till schools resumes but I can’t leave him at home all alone I was wondering if there were any childcare services in Edinburgh preferably in the county Midlothian for him to stay in till I leave work for the day

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 18/04/2024 20:17

Surely nothing is needed in the morning as by 7:30/8 they'll be eithet at school or getting on school bus.

After school i would say get them.to stay at school in the library or similar until whatever time they are allowed, usually its 5/5:30 then bus home
