Hi all, my daughter will be 10.5 in Sep, we started with breast buds last Nov which is the norm for her age. My only problem is she was only 125cm then (she has always been small) she is 132cm now. Her puberty seems to be going very fast…as in her breasts have moved on slightly from buds and we have public hair and slight discharge now, I’m terrified she will get her period soon and have her growth stunted, according to dr google they should get a total of 25-28cm after they start puberty which would leave her 5’ or close to it which is as always what her height prediction was. I just feel puberty seems to be flying, she is my first so not sure if that is normal, I though she would have breast buds for over a year before they would grow and the discharge is also scaring me, anyone else have a really small for age girl and things worked out ok ?

Can you articulate why you’re so worried about her being small? You and your husband are both small so you’re highly like to have a short child. I think life is harder for very short men so I could understand the worry more if you had a boy, but what real difference does it make if your daughter is small?

GardeningIdiot · 31/07/2023 20:41

If you're 5'3" and you have a child with a man who is 5'6", would you not think there is a good chance of having a well below average height child?

GardeningIdiot · 31/07/2023 20:57

(Bruno put it better, I hadn't seen that.)

Gogomoto you don’t seem to be getting me, I’d be over the moon if I thought she would get to 5’2” that’s isn’t the short I’m talking about.

Girls I have no issue with her being 5 foot or close to it. My worry is she is not 4’4”yet and her puberty is going fast so I’m afraid of her being small as in 4’6” final height. gardeningidiot yes I’m unsure what you mean by well below average height. No with those 2 heights I would expect her to reach 5’ to be honest.

Ah, I see what you mean now. I thought you were worrying about her ending up as 4'11 ish. I have a friend who is that height and never had any issues with it except for clothing choice.

I think it’s important to remember that these things are averages and not set in stone. I developed breast buds when I was about 10.5 but my periods started when I was 12.5.
mid you are worried, speak to a GP and see if a referral is in order.

OP I see your concern (some of the responses are a bit unnecessary)! However, while you’ll find lots of info on this online, there will be plenty of outliers who disprove the rule, and so much is unknown and unresearched about female bodies anyway I’m not sure there’s much basis for it.

my daughter has a condition which onset during adolescence and is related to her skeletal growth so I’ve read a lot of what’s online. FWIW she started puberty just over 2 years ago at age 8 and had all of the signs except periods 1 year later (including discharge). Still not started yet and going by our heights I’m still expecting a final growth spurt of around 5cm before they start (hopefully). Her consultant says about 5cm after periods start is normal but again, this is ‘average’ so really could be anything. I think you’ll just have to wait and see.

what about her shoe size? My daughter’s feet grew first but seem to have settled at half a size bigger than mine (so I’m confident she’ll end up around my height which is what the growth charts suggest!)

Fawnfrenchiemum has your daughter grown since she started her period ?

Not a lot, she was measured last summer at exactly 140cm, she started her periods in December and has just been remeasure at 142cm. I can’t say if it 2cm was before or after her periods starting but it’s minimal anyway. The 6 months / year before her periods starting, she had a huge growth spurt.
