Fortnite for a 9 year old?

My son keeps asking if he can play Fortnite. I have no idea! I don't know anything about gaming and find it very hard to judge. Does anyone know what it's like and whether it's suitable for a 9 year old please?

I said no for my 9yo. It's a pretty "realistic" not-very-cartoony first person shooter game and I don't think it is suitable for a 9yo. He had it at 12 but by then most of his classmates had given up on it so he never played it much.

It isn't realistic at all.
Not in the slightest.

My kid is 8 and I let him/her play 13+ games. JFC!

Nope. Our school wrote to us a year or so ago saying their strong recommendation was that children should not be allowed to play it, as it had been resulting in some atrocious playground behaviour. That's reason enough for me.

My 9 year old was horrified when asked if he wanted a Fortnite monopoly game. Said it's nasty and violent! That's me told.

DS10 plays and I join him sometimes. He also plays duos with school friends. For most of the game you are finding loot and then there are a few ‘shoot outs’ where someone will loose. They are quick and unbloody. I can’t see how it makes kids any more aggressive than killing baddies in minecraft or playing with Nerf guns. There is more shouting when they play creative and shoot each other. It has not made my son more aggressive or any more addicted to playing. It would perhaps depend on their personality though.

No behavour change from my DS he has bonded well with his peers with fornite especially through Covid. He comes off when he is told and his behaviour is good he has played since about 8 years old.

I don't get the hate for fortnite.
