11 year old and school residential..

My 11 year old has a school residential in October Mon-Fri.

Only thing concerning me is she's just started her period and is due to be on when she's away.

I'm worried for her, it's all water sports and things like that. She's struggled to get used to pads and changing them frequently and has had some leaks at night time.

I would hate for this to happen to her whilst she's away. She will be mortified.

Well you have a few options. She could try tampons, but if she's / you're not comfortable with that, there are lots of period pants on the market (which you wear throughout the day and dont need a pad at all) and some of them are specifically designed for nighttime and then for swimming etc so will be fine for watersports.

I did think of those, she does not want to try tampons just yet so I thought the period underwear would be good but then I thought if she wears a pair on Monday they won't be washed until she gets back on the Friday so won't they get a bit smelly?

Send her with nappy sacs or similar to pop them in. Some brands do come with a bag

Is she too young for the medication you can get from the GP to prevent / delay a period?

Talk to the teacher in charge. She won't be the first.

(I take a dark towel if staying in hotels in case of leaks)

I'd get her some form of wet bag to put them in after. That way they shouldn't smell

Cheeky Wipes do a great pack of period pants, Dd loves them. She'll want enough for a pair for the daytime and a pair for the evening so might get expensive but worth it overall and you won't have to buy her any pads ountil she out grows them. DD wears them with her wetsuit or knee length swimming costume too and hasnt had any issues.

As she's just started then she might not have a regular cycle so there's a chance she might not be on her period that week.

Obviously you need to be prepared tho!

The period pants seem like a good idea.

If she has a period between now and then you could encourage her to try tampons. My girls used them straight away and never looked back. Alternatively you could consider the pill for a short amount of time, if she remembers to take it everyday then she could take it straight through that month so there would be no break through bleed.
