What freedoms does your 11/12 year old have?

DS starts secondary next month and is one of the eldest. he will be walking to school alone, he's been walking to the local shop and yday I dropped and left him at goals for a few hours with friends alone. What is normal for a 11 year old? This is all a bit new to me and I feel a bit nervous about letting him out even though he is very sensible (is is also diabetic which I think is an extra worry)

My dd is 11 and starting secondary in September too. She stays home alone for periods of time - no full days yet but this will happen in September. Next week she will practice going on the bus route to school (across the city). She also walks to grandparents houses which are about 1.5miles away.

My DD 11 is allowed to roam the village with friends during the day or stay home during the day while I'm out, although I prefer that she not be on her own for the whole day.

Thanks everyone, I have been leaving him alone for longer periods, 4 hours most at the moment. We live in a city so maybe I can practise getting the bus into town with him so he knows the way. I'd probably drop him in at the moment, was thinking to drop him and friends to the cinema leave them while I go to the shop and collect at the end?
