I'd say looking at dd & her friends (she was 12 last b/day) it tends to be interest related, IYKWIM, apart from the inevitable tech stuff.

For her 12th birthday dd will be getting some (very small) diamond stud earrings (DH bought them, I wouldn't have) and some new jodhpurs and riding gloves

Ds2 is 12 next month he wants some tech thing that means he can record his game play on the Xbox and put it on YouTube?!! I need to research..
