quick question - Ugg boots for 11 year old - yes or no?

It's dd's birthday next week and she needs something other than sandals, trainers and school shoes for winter

she'd asked a while ago for 'proper' ugg boots (her Australian granny kept promising her them and fobbing her off with cheap non-uggs)

anyway, are they still ok for 11 year olds? dd not particularly into fashion or pop culture and dresses mainly for comfort rather than style but don't want other more fashion-savvy girls sneering at her

Funny enough I was also considering Uggs for my 11 year old DD, she has never had her Ugg type things off. They were only a fiver from Primark but she loves them, I'm sure they will not last long. Could Australian Granny not buy her a pair, I'm sure they would be cheaper than here, the cheapest place I've seen them is Amazon but I'm not sure what the fit is like, so I'll watch this post with interest.

Groupon have an offer on for Uggs at the moment if she is a size 5 or over.

Show them how the material is farmed... There's videos around. They might change their minds when they see the sheep screaming as their skin is torn off...

My 12yr old has Uggs and loves them. However my daughter is only size 1 feet soo they are a lot cheaper than adults.

Both me and my daughters(4&11)have uggs.they are incredibly warm,comfy and hard wearing.And we are defiantly not Chavez!

Actually, you'll find that many of the very naice, middle-to-upper class girls with messy hair, tracksuit bottoms and horses at home wear them at unis like Oxford, Durham and St Andrews.

An item is NEVER chavvy. Chav is in the styling.

Heysoulsister - where on earth did you get that from? We use sheepskins to make stuff and they are a completely legitimate by product of the meat industry

My dd got her first boots at 11yo. She's worn them lots and also really looked after them. They're her favourite item of clothing.

As I understand it ugg is a generic name for sheepskin boots in Australia and the UGG brand of the expensive boots is not an Australian company. So granny maybe doesnt realise she's not getting the "right" ones. Look at mandmdirect for discounted UGGs (genuine - they are an approved reseller).

heysoulsister may be talking about the practice of mulesing in Australia, where the skin is cut off sheeps' bums to create a bare patch/scar on the backside, which helps to prevent maggots (caused by flies laying eggs on pooey wool).

My DDs all have them and love them - youngest is 10 and oldest is 17. They go with just about everything from dresses to tracksuit bottoms and are really very warm.

My older DDs are very fashion conscious and yet continue to wear them to death, so I can only assume they're still 'in'!

most people would buy cheap clones rather than proper Uggs at that age. Or 2nd hand, maybe. Too expensive for growing feet.

I wouldn't buy cheap ones. I saw a documentary once with a podiatrist type person saying how bad the cheap ones are for teens. If you walk behind someone wearing cheap ones you can see how their ankles are turning over on the inside. He was saying it can cause a lifetime of leg and knee problems. The expensive ones don't have this problem.

How much do they wear them? And who walks any distance nowadays, either? Coz I can easily find you stats to prove how little walking most people do, including teens.

Plus pre/teen girls LOVE shoes (mostly, I was one who didn't, but most do). So they'd rather have 3 cheap pairs then one nice pair. And no pair will get worn enough to ruin feet (or even wear the shoes out).

I would consider 2nd hand. Ebay sales are abysmally slow right now so should be able to find some bargains.

Dd wears hers every time we go out the house unless its school or somewhere muddy from sept till I prise them off her feet in about June.

And she does walk lots. She can easily walk for a few hours round town with her mates, or we walk the dog for a few miles in the park most weekends. I think she gets her my money's worth out of them, she wears them more than her converse.

As it happens I went to the ugg Australia outlet shop today for my dd (10) and short uggs in her size were $80 so that's a ballpark of how much they are here.

dd is only but loves her uggs. One of the reason she loves them is that they are the same as her older cousins (13, 16 and 21). THe genuine uggaustralia ones have much better support and don't turn in. DD had the next version previously but they aren't real suede or leather and the soles weren't as well made.
I sold last years ugg boots on ebay and made almost all my money back as last years came from mandmdirect and were no more than £50 and they sold on ebay for £46.

I'd forgotten I'd started this thread! I got some black button ones for her in the end and she was delighted - list of her friends have them too
