suitable films for 11&12 year old boys

Want to buy a few dvds for DC but am stuck. I really don't want to push them up into watching 15s much as they want to, but we seem to have seen most of the films made for their age group, or they claim they are too babyish.

Can anyone recommend films that aren't necessarily for children but that they might love at that age. They tend to prefer modern and futuristic things over historical ones (except Monty Python) and they absolutely love comedies.

Percy Jackson, Transformers, X-Men. Not sure of the age rating on the latter though.

What about the classics like Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, War Games, Goonies, ET. Also National Treasure and the Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Golden Compass, Stormbreaker or Johnny English.

loads of one voddie has listed would have been on my list too - my boys are now 13 and 12 and have watched all those over the last few years. I'd also say that the Lord of the rings are okay too though I think at least one of them is a 15....but then, I am okay with fantasy violence though not violence involving real people.

These are really great lists. They've watched a lot but not all of them, which suggests they'd like the rest.

They love Outnumbered and Fawlty Towers, as well as Count Arthur Strong. Time to get them watching BlackAdder, I think.

Off to Google Drillbit Taylor and Happy Gilmour as never heard of either of them.

The Princess Bride. Ignore the name, it's the coolest movie ever.

Watch Blackadder first, minidipper - we got the Regency one out a year or so back, were surprised it was rated 15, then realised why when watching it! Probably ok for a mature 12 y/o (dd would have been 10 back then) but you might want to have a look in advance.

Have they seen the Eragon film - not the best ever but still quite enjoyable.

My boys got into blackadder through school - they were studying WW1 and the teacher showed them some episodes of Blackadder 4 so they could see what the trenches were like :)

To me, the saucy stuff either goes over their head or they already understand it so it doesn't worry me too much. we did pause a few times to find out if they knew what "being on the game" meant..........they did!

Agree it is probably fine, as I say dd was younger - but only that the OP mentioned not wanting them to watch so much 15 rated stuff

I guess we all have our own views on what we find acceptable and I don't let mine routinely watch 15s or over either - I am actually quite strict about it compared to some of their friends parents. i would also add that the more highly rated stuff we do allow, we usually watch with them. I don't personally mind them seeing a bit of violence as long as it involves fantasy figures and not actual humans, I don't like a lot of gratuitous swearing, I don't mind a bit of smut as long as it isn't overly kinky stuff iyswim - just normal relationship type. I don't allow horror as I don't want to have to deal with nightmares :) and I don't like Drugs/Alcohol being featured too heavily unless it is in a negative way. So, for example, while i'd let them watch the Blackadder stuff, I think Ted which they are desperate to watch is not suitable and actually is probably under rated at 15.....but I know loads of their friends have seen it. I've watched it twice btw and found it really funny.......just not suitable for family viewing. :o

You are right to point that out to the OP though as I'd mostly forgotten about those bits :)

All the old Bond movies, the mission impossible movies and the Bourne series are all favourites in our house with DS 12.

all loved by DC 9 and 11, all modern indie films. However it is possible that one or more is a 15....

The hunger Games is rated 15 has a dark theme but the violence is mostly implied. Couldn't believe it was rated 15 when later Harry Potter movies were PG.

motherstongue, are you sure it's a 15? it must have been a 12A at the cinema as I took my 12 and 11 year olds to see it as they'd read the books.

We watched Ocean's 11 last night and they enjoyed that.

DH and I watched a bit of the early Blackadder and did think no, not yet. It was quite erm raucous. But then some of what goes on in Glee makes my hair curl (from the pov of DC watching it - I'm very laid back about what DH and I watch) Maybe the don't need protecting as much as I thought.

Been watching Steamboy and Ghibli films recently but it would be nice to have a change from Manga cartoons.
