Boys and masturbation

Ds is almost 11. Dh went to the loo and popped into ds room to tell him it was time to turn light out and settle down for sleep. When dh went in ds had headphones on and his eyes closed so didn't see dh straight away. He had his hand in his Jammies and was apparently really going for it............is 10 almost 11 too young to be doing this or is it normal at this age? Dh said he can't remember doing it til he was 13/14?????

There is no normal, imo. As long as it doesn't cause a problem (I think only problem is that Your DH needs to learn to knock loudly).

Masturbation is normal at 11, for girls and boys. In fact children of all ages may stimulate their genitals because it feels good. Babies are born with the ability to have an erection. A boy's penis begins to get erections 17 weeks into pregnancy and they touch their genitals as a way of self soothing. Puberty Boy is a good book. It is written for boys but as a Mum I found it helpful to read myself before I gave it to my son. I had started using The New Speaking of Sex book my Meg Hickling to help me talk to my children in the age appropriate way when they were 2. It is a great book, especially if, like me, you're not sure what to say when. Now, my children are far less embarassed about their bodies and talk to me about things I think they would have been too embarassed to if I hadn't made it an ok subject. My son is constantly telling me the "wrong" things boys at his school think and how he had to give them the "correct" information, like you can't get a girl pregnant by kissing her with your tongue. Makes me laugh!

Completely normal, nothing to worry abput at all.
