DS 4.8 at school here in Spain. Was called in at collection time along with two other parents to speak to his teacher. He and the others had not finished the page in their workbooks that they were supposed to be doing ( tracing the numbers 1,2,3 and colouring in a picture with a colour key). His teacher said he had done very little in 45 minutes (he had only completed one or two 1,2,3 sequences).
Before a spell of the teacher being off ill he was doing really well and doing everything that was asked of him very well and now seems very difficult to get to work. He brought his workbook home and it was equally difficult to get him to finish at home. He can actually do it all quite easily so the skills are there. I think he might just be really lazy and stubborn.
Unfortunately here in Spain teaching is pretty straight and boring even at his age. He has talked about his teacher being off sick but not once in a negative way.
Any thoughts? My gut instinct is not to worry but the teacher seems really concerned and I know the expectations here are probably quite different - everyone tows the line....

Difficult to answer in terms of expectations as they are very different.

However sounds completely normal to me (i'm a nursery manager). Boys in general tend to find this type of 'formal' work boring. I should imagine he just didn't wanna do it. 45 mins is a huge amount of time to spend on an activity like this (to be honest not really a great activity but appreciate thats how things are done there)

I wouldn't worry at all. Perhaps try some more inspired activities at home with him so you can reassure yourself he understands numbers etc.

yes, i have no concern about his numbers. He's been doing the same kind of stuff for weeks on end now! what worries me is that this is how school is over here and if he's finding it boring now what hope is there for him as he gets older!
