When do I have to register my child?

Apologies if this is a really daft question. DD is 20 months old. When do I need to register her for school and how do I go about it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

not yet

if you look on your local council website they can tell you when for your area

not yet! you do it when they are about 3.5 - 4. work out what year your child will be starting school, then closer to the time check your local councils website and it will give you the dates.

Depends where you live. It might be as young as 2.5 if you want a funded pre-school place in a nursery attached to an infant school. For reception class it's usually around 3.5. Here we have to apply by the beginning of December for admission the following September. Check with your local authority.

you can put your child's name down for school in the term that they are 2.

Not yet, but do check with your council. Round here (Surrey) it could be a lot earlier than 4, particularly if they are summer born.

DD2 was born in August 2005 and we had to apply for her school place by the beginning of October 08. Because she will start Reception in Sept 09, at just turned 4.
