Synthetic phonics like jolly phonics.
And while I'm at it - can you recommend any good books or CDs for a first timer mother trying to get a feel for this and help her dd?

I downloaded words and pictures on i player for dd1 that seems quite good and there is a new sound on each morning. But they only stay on your pc for 7 days after being watched the first time.

I find the Jolly Phonics DVD incredibly boring and keep hiding it. But DS, for some reason, adores it and keeps finding it again.

www.gloopme.com - a very friendly site for young kids learning to read, my kids are happy to play it all on their own.

CBeebies had a really good programme but I don't know if it is available on DVD? We recorded quite a few of them on Skyplus...

Can't remember its name however! Sorry

To be totally honest (as an ex-teacher) I think you'd be better off doing completely different things that they do in school, such as read books, talk lots, make up rhyming word games - you say cat they have to say rat etc. If you do similar things to those that are done in school, you run the risk of turning her right off things as she might get bored and feel pressured.
