Church preschool and charitable status

Just started on the committee of a church preschool and am unsure of how the churches charitable status effects us.(Some members worried over personal liability.) Could anyone on a church preschool committee let me know how they are organised eg. separate charity or part of the church.

We are based at a church but a totally separate charity, if you check the charity numbers on your letterheads you can tell whether it is linked to the church charity or separate.

At the moment the church is exempt from being a registered charity and we have fitted in with that so far. They are going to register next year and not sure if we need to register separately or not.
