The primary school closest to us doesn't have a nursery in it but one slightly further away does.

So do i try to get him in a separate day nursery/pre-school group or the primary school with the nursery within it. I know you don't get a priority place at the primary school just because you use the nursery but does it help at all?

Sorry if i sound a bit thick but i really have no idea.

Speak to your local primary; they will be able to give you advice as to where their pupils went to pre-school.

TBH I would look around the pre-schools available to you and choose the one that suits your and ds' needs best rather than which will guarantee you a school place.

School places are generally dependent on catchment areas rather than the pre school a child attends; although our local church schools do take attendance at sunday school and church-led toddler groups into account.

Most of the places around us are day nurseries. There is 1 pre-school playgroup nearby too.

I just have no idea where to start and i get very flustered talking on the phone and never know what to say .

make a list of the ones in your area, find out if they have any spaces and if they do what they are - you may not have much choice, they may have waiting lists? Go visit the ones with spaces that would be most convenient to you to use.
