Let me tell you about ds2's 'progress report'

keyworker - "These are the targets he is reaching, and this is the next step we are aiming for"

me - "righhhhht. Where it says here that his next step target is to 'talk to the other children' - I was under the impression that this is age appropriate from around the age of 3.

keyworker - "Yes, he talks to adults nicely but not so much the other children. Mind you that's similar for a lot of the children in his group."

me - "Riggghhhhhht. They are grouped by age, aren't they?"

keyworker - "yes, all the children in your ds2's group were born between January and September 2006."

me - "Which would make them all two years old ...?"

keyworker - "erm yes. Anyway, I think he will be settled in and mixing better with the other children by the time we get to the summer holidays, he's doing really well!"

me - "Yes, he will be three in April, so I would expect his social skills to improve as he gets older... I'm not really interested in pushing that sort of thing"

keyworker - "Hmm. Try telling Ofsted that!"

She's a REALLY nice woman. Once I prised the piece of paper out of her hands and actually talked to her about my child, she relaxed and said "He's a funny little thing, isn't he? He likes the water tray. Your ds1 did too, I remember."

Poor staff seem to have to write reams, and this is not a pushy parented preschool, so it must be for ofsted.

It's hilarious isn't it? When dd was in pre-school we all got a 2 page syllabus sent home the key headings looked really impressive but when read went something along the lines of:

Personal Development: HUmpty Dumpty
History: photos of them babies
Language and literacy: Talk about when they were babies etc etc..

*as babies

They did have some woman bring in a real live hedgehog today. For all the bumf they have to fill out, they are good at doing things with the children.

That's the thing ours is fab too it's all the paper work they are made to fill in explaining what they are doing and giving 'reasons' for it when the children are all 3 and under. They could probably do without it themselves.
