Stars for pre-schoolers

My DS was upset that a number of children in his pre-school class received stars but he did not. DS would love to earn a star but does not know what he has to do.

Do you feel it would be appropriate for me to ask the teachers why stars are given out, so I can explain to DS, or would I just sound like a pushy parent (which I am not)? Does your pre-school explain why merit awards are given and, if so, how?

Definately mention this to the staff.

I think in pre-school stars/stickers are usually given out for helping to tidy up, and sitting still during carpet time.

ours got stickers on their wall chart, and they got to take it home at the end of the week. no child ever finished a week without at least 2 stickers - often with a little comment like 'helped in the garden' or 'tidied away after painting nicely'...

Thank you so much for the quick responses. I think I will have a quiet word with a teacher, especially given that our stars seem rather formal (awarded once a week in front of the whole school). I will also follow Mutt's advice and start our own chart at home.
