Spanish lessons/activities at home

Hello! I'd really like my son who's just coming up to 3 to learn Spanish, but there are no classes in my area. Does anyone out there know of any good DVD/games/books that might be suitable? I'd love to hear any suggestions .

Muzzy - expensive though.

well, id just like to say that despite v convincing marketing, i have found the Muzzy dvd's for French to be utterly dull and completely unengaging for young dc. and id imagine the Spanish is the same.
so dont waste your money on that.

i have some basic workbooks for about that age group... for myself actually (start easy an all that) and they are a wee bit more fun id say.

personally, i like getting v simple normal spanish childrens books (i have about 6 board books) and reading them to the dc among their other bedtime stories. sometimes i translate a bit, and other times i just read it as is. they have never said anything about it! they just listen and enjoy the stories.

but then, my approach to learnign languages is to learn it the same way you learn your first; ie , by encounter/experience.

Pipo? It is a series of web pages designed for teaching Spanish speaking children. We use their learning to read sites and they are fab. Have a look at www.pipoclub.com

www.educationcity.co.uk has games to play to help with learning spanish (and french and German, aswell as literacy, numeracy and science games.)

i know this might sound like a silly idea but have you thought about trying something like dora the explorer? my DD is 2.8 and has learned a few words from watching dora and she uses them in the right context (por favor for please gracias for thankyou, abre for open etc) it might be a nice way to ease him into speaking a second language. also i think there is DVDs with dora on teaching spanish counting and basic words. if this isnt what you are looking for then fair enough but its an idea

yeah, doras not bad. i just cant stand the way she YELLS everything. does she even have a normal volume voice?? and her pronunciation is v american. to my ears.

but yeah, i am a fan of just using spanish around dc. they aborb stuff like sponges at this age.

i must get my pal who lives in spain to send over some more board books...

This is a list from someone on here-i too would like my daughter to learn Spanish so i am setting up my own Spanish playgroup-it will be led by a native speaker and hopefully parents will pick up a bit too! Do you know anyone who could do this for you in your area? Try asking at your local primary school. Good Luck!

Good post. I am fluent in Spanish but we don't live in Spain and DH doesn't speak more than a few words. We get books sent over but I am always looking for new ideas. I teach the kids words but don't speak to them a lot in Spanish because it's not my mother tongue.
