can't remember and dd is only Year 2 but could it be the different development areas ?

It refers to the stepping stones - there are the various areas of development e.g communication, language and literacy and then within that there are stepping stones that you would expect each child to achieve by a certain stage of development. Roughly speaking yellow is for the beginning of foundation stage and then it moves up through blue, green and finally grey which is what you would expect a child to achieve by the end of foundation stage i.e by the end of reception. But they all overlap and often a child might be at say yellow for knowledge and understanding of the world but blue for communication language and literacy. Does that help?
