Hello,

The ongoing topic of too many good schools to decide upon.

We live in Long Ditton and looking for opinions on Shrewbury House Pre-Prep and Prep. We viewed the pre-prep and loved it but wasn't too sure on the Prep.

We are also interested to understand the school community and making local friends in both the Pre-Prep and Prep.

TIA x

My son was at the Pre-Prep and was extremely happy there. It's a lovely, nurturing school and I would highly recommend it. The school community is very welcoming and you can really get involved in their parents' association and make new friends at the same time. The Pre-Prep has an impressive record of welcoming children and families from outside the area and from abroad, and helping them to settle in. There's a seamless transition to the Prep school and as Pre-Prep boys don't need to sit the Prep assessment at 7, it's a stress-free choice for many parents. Hope that helps!

I echo the comments of Bestinshow having had my son go through the full journey. I’m sure the head at the house Mrs Hubbard will be more than happy to have a meeting with you to discuss any reservations you may have and to talk to you more about the school.

I have a place in reception at Shrewsbury house pre prep and Milbourne lodge and I am torn. Any advice is very welcome. Is SHPP academic enough? Does anyone have experience from both schools? Do most families do nursery at SHPP and then move to ML for reception? I have boys.

Pinkandredjelly · 16/06/2024 21:34

Depends on so many factors really. Do you want your sons to do 7+ or 11+? Where do you want them to go next? You mention you have a place in reception for both schools. What year of entry for reception are you pitching at? If this year or next, have you done the 4+ assessment as Milbourne Lodge? The thing with these schools is that things change year on year and only you can get a feel for the one that’s right for you and your sons. I’m sure others will be able to share their experiences but I would still offer that you pay another visit and decide with that in mind.

Yes, he’s done the assessment for ML. I have 2 boys. I really like shpp, it’s very nurturing, but I don’t know much about Shrewsbury House School in surbiton? I’ve visited Shrewsbury house pre prep, Shrewsbury House School and Milbourne Lodge. I really just want to know from some people their experiences. I plan on the boys doing the 11+ or 13+.

Ah SH pre-prep is only until Y2, so they leave after doing 7+. So you’re probably aiming for ML then. Hopefully other parents can share the SH senior school experience. I hear it’s very mixed. When I went to visit a few years ago now, they were clear that only a chosen few would go from the pre-prep to the senior school - like some sort of badge of honour. I thought it was weird that they wouldn’t try and get most the boys to aim for the senior school in Surbiton. Very odd.

Yes, so either reception all the way through to 13 at Milbourne Lodge. Or Reception at SHPP and hope that he can continue through to SHS until 13. I really don’t want to have to deal with 7+!

Eshermum73 · 17/06/2024 12:17

Their policy has changed and there is a place for all boys at the prep.

Eshermum73 · 17/06/2024 12:29

Also just to echo comments you should look at both schools again as they are different. Me Akhurst should be able to arrange a tour of the prep with Mrs H, I insisted on this before choosing the school

Sorry to jump on an old thread, but wanted to ask for any more feedback on ML and SH. My son is very shy and feel like a smaller class size and nurturing environment would suit him. I felt that ML might be too pushy and less nurturing (am I wrong in feeling this?). I also have reservations about an all boys school such as Shrewsbury House - is it all boisterous boys and is there more bullying in an all boys school? I have also considered St George’s Junior but am concerned that it’s too big, and Feltonfleet which is smaller but people have said is less academic? Any recent feedback would be much appreciated!

We selected Shrewbury House and are delighted with our choice. It's such a lovely nurturing environment. The older boys are a credit to the school and also help with the younger boys, for example, taking them to their classroom in the morning. We couldn't be happier with the environment and with our son's academic process. They are achieving without being overly pushy. You can sense the pure joy the boys have being at school in the younger years and this is echoed in the older years as well. Feel free to message if want any more insight.
