Blackheath nursery and prep - a couple of questions

I'd love dd to go here but am starting to hear about people "training" their children for the entrance test. Can anyone tell me what sort of thing the entrance test covers and also if they too have heard about "training" for the test and what sort of thing people are doing to get their children in? I'm trying to work out if I need plan b as I'm not convinced I want to "train" dd at such a young age.

Hi MrsF - I have no personal experience of this but I do know someone who has - she had also heard about the "training" thing but, like you (and me for that matter) was not prepared to go to such lengths - her DS got in fine without training. I gather that they ask children to count and see whether they can recognise the letters in their name, among other things. Her DSs love it there, so I wouldn't rule it out for that reason - but you might want to make plan B in any case, as I understand that it's quite oversubscribed.

Thanks legalalien, I'm beginning to wonder if the preparation thing is a bit of an urban myth.

MrsFogi, I know your last post is about 3 years old now, but did your dd get in? My ds will be assessed some time this year and I am already quite nervous about what they will ask him!!

Has anybody got any idea what the Blackheath Prep nursery assessment is all about? My dd will be assessed in mid-March, I'm hoping she'll be assessed on Peppa Pig as she knows a lot about that but I'm guessing it won't be Anyone have any experience?

hi chuggies - am ignoring all the older posts as they date from over 2 years ago!!

it's done one to one (so a Nursery/Reception teacher works with your child) - and they cover about ten little tasks. Ours included:-

looking at a story book together and answering simple questions about what is happening
drawing a picture of Mummy and explaining what they are drawing
looking at some pictures and picking which one is the odd one out and why
doing a jigsaw puzzle
identifying some letters and numbers (neither of mine could do that!)

They are just looking for kids who are willing to have a go and who listen to any guidance and suggestions the teacher gives.

Hi all, we went for the BPrep assessment and got a place on the reserve list - does anyone have experience of how fast they get through the list/turnover of places?

I was wondering if anyone knew what it meant to be on the reserve list for Blackheath Prep? is it the same as the waiting list? or is it a better chance to get in? thanks

Can I ask how this worked out for you? Did you get a place from the reserve list? Is the reserve list real or just a polite way to reject? Do people actually get told no?

We were on the reserve list for Nursery and were offered a place in the May. I think there are usually 5 girls & 5 boys on the list and they just work down it.

Sorry - just seen this reply! Do you mean the May before you were due to start nursery? Or may before reception? Thanks for the info. I've heard they now overfill nursery so might be harder to get a place from the reserve. Oh well, will have to wait and see!

Hi, Our son was offered a place for starting nursery in September. Anyone has experience if we are able to delay start date by 2 terms? How flexible are the admission office for this? Thanks

Why do you want to delay start? Is you son late summer born? Have you accepted the offer and now want to delay start?

indeed delay the start by 2 terms. We haven't signed the agreement yet, it is more complicated as I have the second child who is due to start nursery to the same nursery where my current son is, and there is a long waiting list, but nursery will give priority if my first son is at that nursrey when child#2 starts nursery. Logistics problem... I think nursery is the same in both places - in terms of program, etc. Definitely we want the little one to start Reception there! Any advise appreciated

I am not sure if the school will agree to keep the space as they will be loosing on the fee's. You can definitely talk to the school, personally I wouldn't mention the logistic issue to them.
If your son was summer born it would be a little more easier to get the starting date pushed.
