do the clothes that children were to pre-school get ruined?

I can't really remember what happened with DS so thought I'd ask on here.
I was planning on sending my DD to pre-school clothes that I don't mind getting ruined, paint on, torn etc but my friend always dresses her DD beautifully and can't bring herself to do any different for pre-school. Consequently some of her clothes are already ruined (she's only been about 4 times so far).
Has my friend just been unlucky or am I right to think that clothes worn to pre-school are likely to get trashed?

I'm saving the very cheap or pre-ruined ones for pre-school.

Although aprons are put on the children for messy play some children are just messier than others and within 2 mins of arrival are covered in paint, sand, glue and whatever else is around. I certainly wouldn't send a child in with their best clothes on but this doesn't mean they have to look like an unmade bed

I work in a pre-school and ds attends. We do loads of messy play and always ask parents that they do not dress their children in anything that 'matters'. Children do tend to get paint on them or playdough/sand etc.

We do get children who won't play as they are concerned that mum or dad will be cross with them if they get anything on their clothes, which I think is sad.

Would they get ruined? it depends... they will get trashed that for sure, but I have noticed that the paint stains wash off better with the expensive clothes, and they also are more resilient to being pulled, while the cheap ones I have bought get ruined by the simple act of washing them.

Personally I think children should come home messy from pre-school. I think those squeaky clean establishments are weird. So yes, they'll get trashed but in a good cause.

Dd never ruined anything at pre-school.

I work in a Nursery and a few years ago one mother was overheard complaining to another parent that her dd always came out covered in paint and glue and that, in her opinion, was because we only put aprons on the children in designer clothes . The fact was her dd was a muck magnet who thoroughly enjoyed herself at the messy play area.

thanks for all the replies. I too rather like the thought of DD coming home slightly covered in paint and playdough as I would see that as a sign that she'd really joined in and had fun. I don't think I'm that precious even about her 'best' clothes so I won't worry about her holding back for fear of 'getting in trouble with mum'.

We are very lucky in that DD gets lots of hand-me-downs so I think these will be her pre-school clothes. They are all decent enough that she won't look like a street urchin but as I didn't actually pay for them I will be very relaxed about the state they come home in.

A parent at our pre-school removed her dd as she had gone home with paint on her clothes.

The little girl subsequently went to school with my dc and in the first week they did a class project of Jackson Pollack style pictures...
