Moving from prep to state in year 1

My DS1 is in nursery in a prep school and we are trying to decide whether to go state from reception or year 1. Has anyone made that move in year 1 rather than reception? I worry that he will find it difficult/ not make friends etc

Depending on where you are and how popular schools are, moving at reception is much more likely to give you some sort of choice over where he goes. If you move at year 1, you will have to take a place at whatever school happens to have one.
