Hello. Does anyone having any experiences of sending their children from an English speaking family to a Welsh-medium school? I'm welsh and speak a bit and my husband is English. We speak English at home but live near a lovely Welsh-medium school and would like to send out LG there (she is currently 2 yo). I'm worried she will feel a bit lost. Has anyone got any thoughts or advice? Thanks

Not personally but I know people who have done it and been fine. I would speak to the school, I’m sure they’ll have other children in the same situation so will hopefully be able to reassure you and let you know how they’ll help your DD cope initially

At her age she will absorb the welsh very quickly and be genuinely bilingual.
If you are in North Wales there are a lot of Cylch Meithrin and other Welsh medium toddler groups that are welcoming to welsh learners preparing for welsh medium education.

The only thing I will say, is you may want to do some extra literacy activities in English at home.
I run rainbows (for 5-7) in a welsh medium area. My rainbows are all bilingual but if you ask them to try and write anything, the spelling is very welsh (eg the write "my" as "mae"). I know they will get there in the end with written English, but that would be my only tiny (and rectifiable) issue.

Also there are lots of classes for English speaking parents to help them with Welsh medium primary school.

If it's a lovely Welsh school as you say I think she'll be fine. I went to Welsh school and speak it now and I like the fact that I can.

If for some reason you think she doesn't like it or doesn't adapt then she can change schools. You'll know.

Are you in South Wales or would you rather not say?

I didn't send DD to welsh school for reasons unrelated to my own opinion. For you, van I suggest researching diversity if it matters to you!!! If it doesn't don't worry x

Hi , I'm English my husband Welsh. neither of us speak Welsh. our 2 daughters are at a Welsh medium primary and have been since they were 3. They haven't struggled at all. When they started in the nursery classes at 3, they used a mix of English and Welsh. At 6 and 9 they can both speak and read Welsh and English.

We know another couple whose daughter also went through Welsh medium education including 6th form. There was support for non Welsh speaking parents when it came to secondary school homework. (not quite sure how/what)

We are in south Wales and the demand for Welsh medium education is increasing

Many of DS' friends go to Welsh medium schools and a significant number are English speaking. They seem to have got on fine even when only English is spoken at home.
