Early education and school

Hi,
I am really confused as to when my child starts nursery and then school. My son was born in August 2016. When should I start applying for nursery ? Also do I have to apply for schools also beforehand? I am in Aberdeen (Scotland).

Will he qualify for nursery for 2 year olds?. If not he will qualify for a place when he is 3. In my area that can be the day after their 3rd birthday (I'm north Lanarkshire)
