What do you think of a Nursery having a uniform?

Just been to look round a nursery that is attached to a junior and infant school. My 3 year old will be starting in jan just for 5 hours a week to play and socialise with kids. I have been told she will need to wear a school uniform...shirt and tie etc (same as all the school kids) Not sure what I think of this. It's gonna cost a fortune as I'll need more than one won't I? Anyone think uniforms are a silly for pre-schoolers? Maybe it's me just not being used to it. What are your thoughts?

I have never seen, even at fairly chi-chi preps, a uniform of that sort in nurseries.

Tabards/smocks are a seriously good idea. Sweatshirt/joggers is also reasonable.

Full on ties etc? Is it possible you have misunderstood?

It's bat shit. Polo shirt (not white!) or sweatshirt fine. Proper uniform is ridiculous.

Mine has a uniform polo shirt and trousers

When I was in nursery ('99-'00) I wore a uniform. Grey joggers, white polo and red school sweatshirt I think.

That's ridiculous. My dd is at an international/British school abroad which plays up to British tradition (house points, uniform etc) but even they let nursery and reception wear polo shirts and elastic waisted trousers/skirts. I don't think they wear ties until year 3.

Tbh I think real ties on 3yr olds are a strangulation risk.

Shirt and tie? Ridiculous. Ds has a polo shirt and sweater and he looks cute but a whole uniform is mad.

My 2 year old has an optional uniform. He wears trousers, polo and jumper. Was really cheap in sainsburys and stops his nice clothes being ruined when they play in mud, paint etc.
For 5 hours a week surely one would suffice?

Totally normal where I live, my DD wore a uniform from 2 years old. Private nursery if that is of any relevance.

A lot of nurseries do (cheap) polo shirts and joggers, but these are almost always optional. A proper, expensive, mandatory uniform for a three year old would put me right off - what else are they so rigid and un-sensible about??

Uniforms are a huge pain in the arse.

Do not give up the joggers and the shirts and being comfortable enough to play and run about a second sooner than you have to.

The pre-school DS1 went to had a uniform of a polo shirt, sweatshirt, and trousers in the school colours.

Shirt and ties seem silly for 3 yr olds.

All nurseries attached to primary schools around here have a 'uniform' - school t-shirt and joggers.

As a Reception teacher I can honestly say that anything more is insane. Nursery children need changing frequently (toilet accidents, falling over, splashing in puddles) and they get very mucky even wearing an apron (paint, messy play, pen).

Why would you want to lumber the children, their parents and the poor staff with a formal uniform?!

For crying out loud, won't they have enough years of being forced to wear ugly, uncomfortable clothes for the purpose of conforming?! Why start so young? I can't see how this will be beneficial to the children. Any nursery doing this would go to the bottom of my list.

When I looked around DS's school they had shirts and ties for girls and boys from reception onwards. I was told that after each PE and swim class, the teacher & TA spent 10 minutes each tying ties. When we joined the following year they ditched this uniform for more comfy polo shirts. I think it had been at the request of staff!

I think it is usual for nurseries attached to primaries. But most are not attached to primary schools so it is unusual for nursaries overall. I think it is a bit silly really, especially shirt and tie. I'd really struggle getting my 3 year old in a tie! But nurseries attached to schools have advantages to independent ones so I guess it may be worth it.

Yes all the nurseries attached to schools in our area wear school uniform. Mine went over to the school several times a week for activities/assemblies etc. I think it is a good thing because it helps the children get used to going to school and stops first day tears when they do eventually start in Reception Class.

Ours had a polo shirt and jumper but it was optional so they could wear their own clothes anyway. Our primary school switched away from polo shirts to shirt and tie which I thought was bonkers. Apparently the majority of parents wanted it that way
