I have a very longwinded dilemma about sending ds to nursery/preschool but really need some advice

Send him to your preferred nursery in January. Deal with the other stuff when you get there.

You may or may not sell - no point in putting things off on a maybe. He may well settle just fine into pre-school anyway.

Pruni, dd has moved schools 3 times. She went to nursery at 3, loved it and made a close friend there, then we buggered off to France and she started a new school and made another close friend, then we came back and she is at yet another new school. It won't last as this house is rented so at some point we'll have to move again. But I have found that short-term it was difficult and hearbreaking, but long-term it has boosted her confidence, she is more of an individual now and makes friends easily.

If you give children these challenges to face early on, they deal with it much better and it actually helps them when they become older and have problems. If a child grows up in a lovely, secure, stable environment with no change, how do they deal with the realities of life later on? Your ds will benefit in the long-term, but in the short-term it will be tough for him, and you.

Unless you're moving somewhere fairly close and can do what ggirl says, I'd still send him locally if he seems to really need it. Dd started playgroup the September she turned 3 but it closed at Christmas so I had to move her elsewhere. There was no problem at all. And she's very shy and doesn't settle down terribly easily usually.

Tough one, Pruni. Assuming you can't follow ggirl's suggestion (hope you can, as it sounds ideal), I think I would go for something like two mornings a week at the local pre-school, so that your ds (yes of course he's bright ) gets some stimulation but is still used to having days not at that place. But that would be me; I've been counting the days to ds starting at preschool for about a YEAR as I think he's going to love it so much.

It depends how hard you found the unsettled period - pretty hard, I think. sorry to hear you're having to move again, hope you're OK with it.

Well I would send him,think children are pretty resilient .
My ds sounds a bit like yours,beligerant but cuddly and sensitive.
He adores preschool,has asked to increase his days.
I would send him anyway as he'll get a lot out of it ,not to mention the free time for you.
Cross that bridge when you get to it and don't worry.
