Does he HAVE to go?

DS is 3.5 and started pre-school a few weeks ago. It's part of our local primary school. He gets the 15 free hours a week and goes 8.45-11.45 mon-fri.
My question is, does he have to go? Is he required by law to go every day? Could I, for example, only send him mon-thurs? Would we be fined if we took him on holiday during term time?
He enjoys going but is so tired when he gets home, that he just wants to have a nap and if he doesn't, he's unbearable because he's so tired! I miss our little days out with his other little friends(who have their free hours at private nurseries so only go 3 days but for 5 hour sessions-not an option where DS is)
I've waffled a bit, sorry!

He doesn't have to go at all. Whether they would agree to pt hours (bearing in mind they are claiming funding for 15) depends on their flexibility and waiting list. You won't be fined but may lose the place.

Well when u mentioned to his teacher last week about him going to his childminder on a Thursday due to me working, she didn't seem terribly keen, saying the headteacher doesn't usually allow it...
Bit winding promising really...
